Reds Roundup : 5-16-12

Votto, ready to make a run at another MVP

It is May the 16th and very early in the MLB Season, but the Reds have already had alot of ups and downs.  We are 35 games into the season so far and the Reds are 18-17 and 2.5 games behind the first place Cardinals.  This is not where I and alot of other Reds fans expected them to be at this point in the season, but they are still in striking distance and we have a long way to go in the season.  I thought once the Cardinals let Albert Pujols go to the Angels in free agency that the Reds were clearly the team to beat in their division, but the Cardinals have once again proved me wrong but I can’t wait to see what the standings look like in October.

Their have been some highlights and lowlights so far this season.  We will take a look at the highlights first.  If your talking about the Reds you have to start with Joey Votto.  He is by far their most consistent player he is batting .311 with a .465 on base percentage( Yes that’s right a .465 on base percentage, that means he is pretty much getting on base 1 out of every 2 at bats) with 5 home runs, 16 doubles, 24 RBIs, 34 walks to only 29 strikeouts ( Yes he has more walks than strikeouts).  Jay Bruce has also been great so far this year he is hitting .300 with 10 bombs and 26 RBIs.  Catcher Ryan Hanigan has been very solid this year hitting .311 even though he has been splitting time with young phenom catcher Devin Mesoraco.  Brandon Phillips is only hitting .252 so far this year but he makes up for it by saving runs on defense, I look for him to turn it up soon and be hitting between .280 to .300 at the end of the season.  SS Zack Cozart is coming along and even though he is only hitting .246 right now everytime I turn on a game he is on base.  Also some pitchers have also stepped up so far this season Johnny Cueto has a 4-1 record with a slim 1.89 ERA and the bullpen has been very good Aroldis Chapman has been making batters look silly so far this year and sports a 0.00 ERA( this is why I think he should be in the starting rotation ).  Big Man Logan Ondrusek also has a 0.00 ERA coming out of the bullpen and has looked dominant all year.

Now it’s time to look at some reds that have been struggling early in the season.  The obvious person to start with is Scott Rolen, Never in my life did I ever think I would want Edwin Encarnacion back on the Reds but Edwin is mashing right now for the Blue Jays and Rolen is hitting .174 and is back on the DL.  The one good thing about this is young third baseman Todd Frazier is getting more playing time and starting to show what he can do, I do hope that Rolen get’s better and is able to come back healthy because the Reds will need him later in the year when they are fighting for a playoff spot.  Another player that has not been as good as advertised is Mat Latos.  Was I the only Reds fan that was mad when the Reds gave up alot of top prospects for a guy that pitched for the padres and had good numbers.  Every pitcher for the Padres has good numbers look at what Volquez is doing for them this year their ballpark is one of the biggest in the league.  I knew that when he came to a smaller park like Cincinnati’s his numbers would go up some, but I hope he settles in and gets used to his new surroundings and starts pitching like the Reds expected him to when they gave up the farm to get him.

Speaking of the farm, below are 3 players in the Red’s minor league system that I think you should keep an eye on for the future.  All 3 of them play for the Red’s high A ball team the Bakersfield Blaze which is managed by former Big Red Machine member Ken Griffey Sr.

The first prospect to watch is Billy Hamilton a 21 year old burner that has 35 stolen bases in 35 games so far this year.  He is also hitting .345 with a .413 OBP.  He is a great athlete that signed a letter of intent to play football at Miss. St. before choosing to play baseball.  He is playing SS right now but some scouts see him as a second baseman at the pro level.  I think they might try to move him to the outfield to get him up to the pros quicker because he would be a great leadoff hitter and the Reds need one Drew Stubbs has great speed but never gets to use it because he never gets on base.  I think he will be at the pro level within the next couple of years.

Donald Lutz

The next prospect is Donald Lutz and he has a power bat.  He is 23 years old and in 38 games so far this season he is hitting .313 with a .354 OBP and 11 Home Runs and 34 RBIs.  The only bad thing for Lutz is that he plays first base and the Reds have a guy named Joey Votto playing there so maybe he can learn how to play another position to get to the pro level because the Reds would love to have that power bat in the lineup in the future.

Tony Cingrani

The last prospect to keep an eye on is Pitcher Tony Cingrani who was a 3rd round pick by the Reds in last year’s draft.  He is a college pitcher that played at Rice which is a college baseball powerhouse.  So far this year he has started 7 games and pitched 40 innings.  He has a 0.68 ERA with 53 strikeouts and only 10 walks.  He is 22 years old and since he did pitch in college hopefully they can put him on the fast track to the Majors because the back end of the rotation has been very inconsistent so far this year.

That is all the info I have for this Reds Roundup so until the next Roundup, Go Reds.

Don’t hate Lebron, Hate the NBA

Lebron says thumbs down to the haters

Lebron James needs no introductions. He is a great player and person. He was once a hero to my state of Ohio, but now the villain. Still sour from the big tragedy, excuse me I mean the big decision. People are angry with him and feel cheated. The thing is he didn’t have much of a choice. The Cavs brought in average talent and expected him to guard the best player on the court and score 30 points. His face after the series with the Celtics said it all . He couldnt guard Ray Allen, Rondo, Garnett, and Pierce. He tried to get the big 3 in Cleveland, but as much as I love Ohio, most people don’t see it as an attractive city ask Noah from the Bulls. So he went to Miami with his good friend Wade and Olympic teammate Bosh. His mistake was how he went. He left people in shock. I didn’t know how to feel. I was thinking he will get a ring but at what cost. I hope he can handle the pressure. If you watch the movie More Than a Game you can easily see his humble beginning. He was loyal to his friends and never let his success cast a cloud over his relationships. He loves Ohio but would never shake the no ring club the NBA mocks and uses as a stick of greatness. He just won his 3rd MVP, but if the Heat look bad it will be his fault. If they don’t win the title it’s his fault. With all this weight wouldn’t you want help carrying the load. Kobe had Shaq, Jordan had Pippen, David Robinson had Tim Duncan, Magic had Kareem, Pierce had Garnett and Allen, Bird had Mchale and Parrish. So don’t hate Lebron hate the NBA.

Lebron was just named MVP of the NBA for the 3rd time in his career.

Ironton Lady Tigers Softball Report 4-5-12

The Tigers are on a roll. There off to a 6-2 record and have been close in the 2 losses. Ironton has been drilling the ball lead by Potter and Wetzel. Who also pull double duty and pitch. Wetzel pitched 12 innings without a walk in a 2-1 loss to Minford. Ironton looks like a complete team who can hit, pitch, and run. The Tigers have several dominate wins
Vs Symmes Valleys 17-1
Vs Chesapeake 19-9
Vs Coal Grove 26-2
Vs South Point 8-2
Vs Rock Hill 4-2
Vs Raceland 9-7
It looks like they will be a team to watch for during the tournament.

Baseball Report : St. Joe Flyers 4-4-12

Through the first week and a half of the season the St. Joe Flyers Baseball Team is 3-2.  Which is a great start for the young team with no Seniors and a new head coach in Brent Wirzfeld.

When watching the Flyers play you can feel the energy and passion that Coach Wirzfeld coaches with.  He is constantly coaching the kids and pointing them in the right direction during the game.

The Flyers also have alot of young talent and toughness.  During the first game a player was hit in the head with a foul ball that hit him after it hit his bat, The player stayed in and finished the game.  That tells you a little about the toughness of the team.

One of the Flyer’s most talented players is Junior Justin Mahlmeister who in their first game pitched 6 no hit innings and hit a 3 run bomb to centerfield.  In another start this season he had 15 strikeouts.  He is definitely one of the best players in the area.

There are also other good players that have contributed to the Flyers early success.  Sophomore Joseph Payton has done a good job at the plate and as a relief pitcher.  Junior Grant Geswein has been solid and Freshmen Hunter Pemberton and Bryson Adkins have done well at the plate.

The Flyers are off to a good start and if they keep playing hard and following their coach, I think they can keep it going and have a great season.  If you want to go to a baseball game they are a entertaining team to watch.

WHY COLLEGE FOOTBALL SHOULD GO TO PLAYOFF FORMAT AND PAY PLAYERS

It’s been argued time after time, but nothing changes really.  College football doesnt change its format because its getting big dollars and it controls what teams advance to what bowls.  Its a monopoly on sports.  The conferences get 12-20 million dollars for making the big game, the actual players 00000000000000. Ridiculous that kids who work hard as the pros do, get nothing.  They recruit inner cities where kids grow up struggling due to several situations including the economy.  They say the scholarship is enough.  Tell that to someone who misses meals on a regular basis or someone with multiple siblings living off one minimum wage salary.  Yes kids like Mike Golics son don’t need anyhting.  Duh their dad’s rich.  Andrew Luck dad’s rich.  A lot of kids come into a college with nothing.  Then get disciplined for selling trophies they earned.  Big deal.  Now how does this relate to the college playoff format.  Simple if they put teams from the MAC, Conference USA, the WAC, and The Moutain West, guess who pockets hurt.  Not the players.  The bowl people, who help format the shameful BCS.  The BCS is a tool to assure sleeper teams Boise, TCU, Houston, and any other team who runs the table isn’t good enough to make the top bowl game.  Boise State went 12-1 lost to TCU But crushed Georgia and ended in the Las Vegas Bowl that pays out around 700,ooo.  Make since nope.  Then Michigan who lost to Iowa and Michigan State went to the Sugar Bowl vs Virgina Tech who lost to Clemson twice.  These teams got the sought after 15- 20 million.  Why because these schools are big drawls, meaning sellout all the tickets $$$$$$$$.  College football is becoming weaker because teams are realigning around the country for their chance at the bowl game sweepstakes.  Don’t be suprised if the Big East is stripped from their automatic million dollar bowl bid since big names Pittsburgh, Syracuse, and West Virginia are leaving.  Fans want a playoff system and the teams should too.  Lsu Alabama was the worst championship game Ive seen in awhile.  These bowls are history we know but they are not effective.  Why not set the playoff games in these stadiums.  Do a 16 team playoff, when its down to 8 teams put the games in Pasadena, New Orleans, Miami, and Arizona.  Simple the final four could alternate as well as the championship.  Fire the BCS go to schedule, losses and wins.

A minute with the coach – South Point Head Football Coach Rick Marcello

I recently got the chance to sit down and talk with new South Point Football Coach Rick Marcello, The Interview went as followed.

Question #1.  What is your coaching style?   Coach Marcello said he is an Offensive minded coach.  He has 15 years of experience as an Offensive Coordinator.  He also played WR at South Point and in college at Morehead State.

Question #2.  What type of Offense will you run?  We will run a spread offense.  Spread from a formation standpoint, it is not just a passing formation.  Just a formation to better read the defense.

Question #3.  What do you like most about coaching?  Giving back to a sport that I love football. But it is all about the players and I enjoy teaching them the great life lessons that the principles of football offer.  Coaching enables me to give back to players information that I have learned over the years.

Question #4.  Who are some coaches you have learned from over the years?  Mike Jupin was my Head Coach at South Point; he focused on hard work and dedication.  He was prepared and knowledgeable.  Also Mike Jackson who I coached with at Louisville Ballard is a brilliant man and a great motivator who could have done anything he wanted to with his life and he decided to focus on coaching. I have benefited from many other coaches as well.

Question #5.  Who are some of the key players you will be counting on in the 2012 season?  John McClanahan and Dustin Harrison are two kids that just medaled in power lifting and will be two key seniors in our interior offensive line.  We also have a lot of younger guys that will play a lot for us this season.

Question #6.  What do you think will be some of your teams strengths this season?  Skill players and these kids are eager to turn this program around and compete.

Question #7.  What are some other places you coached before you got this job?  I have coached at all levels I spent some time coaching the offensive side of the ball at Oldham County and I spent two years as the head coach of the Freshmen Team at Louisville Ballard.

Question #8.  What are your goals for this year?  Our goals every year will be to win the conference, make the playoffs, and eventually win state.  Our primary goal this year is to be competitive in every game and work hard.

During the time I got to spend with Coach Marcello I noticed that he has a great energy about him and a passion for the kids and the game of football.  I think South Point hired the right man for the job and they are headed in the right direction.

Coach Marcello also shared with me how much of a blessing he thinks it is to be able to come back home and coach football at his old High School.

Ohio State vs. Kansas Part 2

This Saturday in New Orleans a rematch will take place between The Ohio State Buckeyes and the Kansas Jayhawks.  The Jayhawks won the first meeting earlier this year but the Buckeyes were without their best player Super Sophomore Jared Sullinger due to back spasms.

One thing that both of these teams have in common is that last year both of these teams were more talented overall but may have better team unity this year.  Kansas has been on the ropes in a couple games already this tourney but have found ways to win.  Ohio State has been in a couple of tough matchups but came up with big plays when they needed them.  Both teams seem to be playing their best basketball down the stretch.

Ohio State is led by Sullinger but he is far from a one man team.  Gutsy Point Guard Aaron Craft gives opposing point guards fits with his great defense and all out effort.  Senior William Buford has struggled during the tourney but you never know when he will have a big game and if he gets hot watch out.  Deshaun Thomas is the most improved player for the buckeyes this year and is scoring machine that is having a great tourney but will be put to the test having to go against a Monster in Thomas Robinson, Hopefully he can hold his own.  Guard Lenzelle Smith Jr. is about 6’3” but is not afraid to mix it up with the big boys.  I also hope to see Freshman Big Man Amir Williams get some playing time because he has been getting better and he might present a better matchup against Kansas 7 footer Jeff Withey if Sullinger gets in foul trouble.

Kansas is a Tough, Scrappy team that has a star in the post in Robinson and a shot blocker in Withey.  They have a Point Guard in Tyshawn Taylor that can be great but you kind of never know what your gonna get with him but he has the talent to have a big game.  Wing players Elijah Johnson and Travis Releford have been in the program for years and are finally getting their chance to have starting roles and both have taking advantage by playing solid basketball all year.

Key Matchup : I think the key matchup in this game will be at the Power Forward spot where Deshaun Thomas will battle Thomas Robinson.  If Thomas can win this battle and hold Robinson to under twenty points and stay out of foul trouble I think the Buckeyes have a good chance to win.

C Dion Mckinely 6’5 sr 19.5 ppg                         C Holden Hertzel 6’5 sr 10.4 ppg

This is where Portsmouth wanted to be after losing in the final four last season to Cleveland Central Catholic 58-47.  To earn a final four spot 2 years in a row is impressive.  Even more impressive is the fact they beat dominate teams Chesapeake, Ironton, Piketon, and Lucasville Valley.  Portsmouth is on a streak that has lasted most of the season.  Ironton is the last team to beat them.  This game should be very quick a lot of fast breaks both teams push the ball well.  Portsmouth has become a well rounded team Mckinely does not have to score 30 for Portsmouth to win.  They have several weapons and can be lethal inside and out.  Cincinnati is a balanced team as well.  They have 3 double figure scorers as well.  They are younger than Portsmouth and definetly lack the experience of the Trojan Dynasty. Cincinnati Day did have a good season last year, they lost to Cincinnati Taft by 4 in the Regional finals.  Cincinnati Taft won the State Finals by 20 or more.  So they are a really good team.  I know they are better from last year.  I believe Portsmouth will not let this one slip away.  Cincinnati Summit Day will probably be in the hunt again next year so Ironton and Chesapeake might want to take notice of their gameplan.  Good Luck to both teams.

NEXT !

On March 22nd the Portsmouth Trojans will be making their second trip to the Divison 3 Final Four in two years.  This time they way face a Young and Scrappy Ottawa-Glandorf team that has alot of Basketball Tradition.

The Trojans made it to this game by beating a very talented Ironton 50-40.  Zaide Whitley really stepped his game up on both ends of the floor.  He not only led the Trojans in scoring with 12 points, but he also did a good job of slowing down the best pure scorer in the area Zac Carter.  Wayne Evans chipped in 11 points and Dion McKinley  had 9 points.  I think Portsmouth is getting better as the season is going on.  If Dion McKinley stays out of foul trouble Portsmouth will be hard to beat because they are a different team when he is on the court.  The Trojans have been here before and have the experience and talent to win this game and make to the State Title Game.

The Titans of Ottawa-Glandorf upset Lima Central Catholic 44-38 to get to this game.  They only average 53.8 ppg but they have only given up 46 ppg to their Opponents.  They have no Seniors in their starting lineup, But they have a proud basketball tradition and will be ready to play Portsmouth.  The Titans are led by two Juniors that average in double figures, Guard T.J. Metzger (11.4 PPG) and Forward Michael Rosebrock (11 PPG).  The Titans have some size but I don’t know if they are as athletic as McKinley.  The Titans are probably going to have to try to keep this a low scoring game although Portsmouth has proven they can win grind it out games as well as up tempo games, But if Portsmouth starts getting out and running in transition I think it will be hard for Ottawa-Glandorf to beat them.

Our Projected Starting Lineups

Portsmouth (23-2)                   vs.                   Ottawa-Glandorf (19-6)

G-Wayne Evans-Sr.-6’1”-15 ppg                           G-T.J. Metzger-Jr.-6’1”-11.4 ppg

BACKYARD BRAWL

Two teams that need no introduction.  They meet each year and here recently the stakes are much higher.  By now we all know the usual suspects.  Portsmouth is lead by Dion Mckinely who scored 30 in their win over Chesapeake.  Ironton is lead by Zac Carter who scored 21 in a win over Coshocton.  These teams will definetly try to isolate both of these players, thats why the supporting cast must step up and show there is more to the team than their leaders.

Portsmouth State Final Four Appearances

1925, 1926, 1927, 1929, 1931 (1st), 1934 (2nd), 1939, 1941, 1961 (1st), 1978 (1st), 1980 (2nd), 1988 (1st), 1990 (2nd), & 2011[9]

Ironton Final Four Appearances

1994, 2005

I don’t think people forgot 2005 when Ironton almost knocked off OJ Mayo and Bill Walker’s North College Hill team in the State Final.  This game will be such a good game.  The series split during the season Ironton won the first meeting 66-52 and Portsmouth took the second game 59-53.  Mckinley scored only 15 points combined in those 2 games.  Wayne Evans picked up the slack averaging 21 a game vs Ironton. Carter and Fletcher averaged 20 points a piece against the Trojans this season.  This is the game before the State the stakes are too high to not be ready.  Good Luck to both teams.
